For Symphony Orchestra
There’s a single home on Whitten Lane. It’s an historic place where children can make memories that will last a lifetime. One cannot forget the incredible views of the sun shining over the hushed fields of golden corn.
At the beginning of Whitten Lane, the melody in the woodwinds describes the rural outlook. This is later interrupted by variations of that melody played throughout the orchestra which moves the piece into a mixed-meter section. At this point in the piece, one might imagine children jumping through puddles after a light morning fog amidst the acreage of land encompassing the home. The English horn then takes the melody which leads the audience through the woodlands surrounding Whitten Lane. Following is a chorale in the woodwinds expressing the strong sentiment these memories hold.
Eventually, the orchestra comes to a halt and is left only with piano. This melody represents the heir of the Whitten name, who has been playing piano for nearly 80 years. The melody is variated once again by the piano in a rubato, solo section that is later joined by woodwinds and strings. The pace then increases and invites the audience to explore what lies beyond the corners of Whitten Lane. As the ballad begins to augment, the excitement of the journey builds stronger. Finally, the now forlorn piece climaxes and begins its decent peacefully unto Whitten Lane. As the street lies still, the chimes can be heard representing a distant bell tower.
The sun will rise over the horizon, and the strings will wake everyone from their dreams. This is followed by the woodwinds, and then the brass. The first melody returns shedding light on the possibilities a new day brings on Whitten Lane. Old tunes are passed from the English horn to the trumpets. This intensity grows through a strongly united rhythm that connects all of the voices together as one. Suddenly quiet once again, the piano reminisces with the soloistic melody from before.
The full ensemble is finally brought together to chorale on about the adventures that took place on Whitten Lane. The melody reappears, bringing familiarity to the piece. Fast tempos return signifying the everlasting adventure that Whitten Lane carries beyond its grounds. The entire orchestra ends in unison in order to express the triumph of the travels that once, and will always define Whitten Lane.
