Description
For wind instruments, harpsichord and percussion.
The kinetic force for the rhythmic pulsation of Toccatta is the interaction of a variety of rhythms in different instrumental timbers: harpsichord, woodwinds, brass and percussion. The division of a twelve-tone series into three units of four tones each generates the vertical force; each tone adheres to its respective group; this, in turn, is attracted to the overall pitch-center, the tone D. The result is a multidirectional polarization of all pitches around their common center of gravity. The total blend of all structural forces is achieved in a Cadenza for all instruments.
The harpsichord, traditionally a conservative instrument, concludes TOCCATA in a tonal version of the basic twelve-tone series.
Some degree of amplification of the harpsichord is recommended.
In the solo harpsichord part, dynamic markings have been inserted for the eventuality of performance on the pianoforte; they will also help in choosing the registration on the harpsichord.
Measure 297 is an aleatory Cadenza for all instruments; number 1 to 105 indicate the number of the beat on which each instrument is to enter; the conductor beats single ¼ beats in the same tempo as the rest of the composition.
