Description

In the poem, The Caged Skylark, Gerard Manley Hopkins compares the human spirit to a caged skylark. The skylark, by nature, has the strength to face harsh elements such as storms and winds, so we have the ability to face danger and fear. But we, like the skylark, are often confined to our cage, "a mean-house, a bone-house." The music combines these emotions of greatness and helplessness in both the caged skylark and the caged-by-bones human being.
