Santos Cota - Sonatina for English Horn and Piano - PDF Score and Part
Description
This Sonatina for English Horn and Piano consists of three contrasting movements that share a common use of contrapuntal techniques, including imitation, inversion, and retrograde.
The first movement is in sonata form and emphasizes a lyrical but intense character.
The second movement is much shorter and more parodic in nature, and revolves around a single theme that is presented six times. Restatements of the theme utilize inversion, retrograde or both techniques. Between each statement are brief contrasting episodes. After the third appearance of the theme (measure 26), the entire movement is repeated in reverse order.
The final movement is slow and dark, offering a stark contrast to the earlier sections and giving the Sonatina a disturbing and unresolved conclusion.
