In Concertino the more tan sixty instruments present are treated as an orchestra of four instrumental families:
1) wooden keyboard
2) metal keyboard
3) cymbals
4) drums.
All the instruments, individually or in homogeneous groups, are always used in some structural function. The enormous range, the vast variety of timbres and the virtually limitless dynamic potential of the "percussion orchestra" are explored, and exploited, to their fullest in the three contrasting movements:
Organ point - interaction of wooden keboards, metal keboards and drums;
Adagio-Variations - interaction of wooden and metal keyboards, this time with cymbals;
Rondo impetuoso - interaction of the four families of instruments.
Attention is called to the fact that, should the need arise, the parts of 1st and 2nd Xylophone, Marimba, Bells, Chimes and Pianoforte, though conceived for performance on two sets of instruments, may be executed by two players on one instrument only.
It is suggested that the stage be set either symmetrically in a visually attractive placement or by grouping the homogeneous families of instruments; in either case, the Pianoforte should occupy the centre or the stage and Player 1, who in Rondo moves to the Timpani, should be stationed next to Player 12.
For 12 Percussion (Xylophone 1, Xylophone 2, Marimba 1, Marimba 2, Vibraphone, Bells 1, Bells 2, Chimes 1, Chimes 2, Tom-Toms, Bass Drum, Timpani) and 2 Pianoforte
