John Heins - Ballade
The Ballade, orchestrated in the romantic tradition, is a programmatic work cast in modified sonata form. It is inspired by the piano music of Chopin and Brahms and conveys a 20th Century homage to their romantic spirit. After a short introduction, the main theme is introduced by a pair of clarinets. This idea occurs throughout the piece in various guises, encircled by contrasting sections that are derived from fragments of the main theme.
