A Poem for E[rin]mily, for flute, clarinet and mezzo-soprano, is composed on a text by the late American poet Miller Williams (1930-2015). Williams’ “A Poem for Emily” (1986) caught the composer’s attention for the sweet father-daughter sentiments it expresses and because the distance in years between the father and daughter in the poem—fifty-three—matches perfectly the difference in ages between the composer and his daughter Erin (hence the title of this musical tribute). Hints of atonality mix with tonal underpinnings as the music follows the father’s touching contemplations at the birth of his daughter and their lives to come. The composer’s choice of mezzo-soprano (even though the text is from the father’s perspective) holds personal significance, as does the choice of flute and clarinet. Performance time is a little less than seven minutes. The score is notated at concert pitch and comes with parts for flute and clarinet in B-flat.
