The short first movement uses imitation of themes much as an invention, as well as treatments of rhythmic varieties. However, it does not adhere to traditional harmonic structure. The second movement, similar to a scherzo in nature, continues the examination of rhythmic interplay while inverting the thematic material. In the third, Lento movement, Cota takes one on an introspective wandering through a sometimes dark passage, as though contemplating the vicissitudes of life in slow musical language. The fourth movement brings one back to a festive, fugue-like finish, and interplays the rhythms within ostinato patterns. The horn is interspersed in changing musical interplay with the clarinet, and the oboe is of limited technical difficulty. Thus making this an attractive piece for student performers.
