Montage is based upon two ideas, one melodic and the other harmonic. The introduction opens with a fanfare-like figure in trombones and horns followed by a choral treatment of the melodic idea. Beginning at measure 20, this idea is treated seriously between two voices with the harmonic idea interspersed.
