The great Victorian poet, Gerard M. Hopkins, composed Binsey Poplars in 1879. In the poem, he mourns not only the loss of the aspen trees which grew along the river but is saddened by the whole of nature being destroyed by human beings. The music aims to express the sadness ("O, if we knew what we do....") when we experience the continuation of the destruction of nature throughout today's world.
