Sound Leads O’er All, for solo baritone voice, SATB choir, piano and string orchestra, sets to music lines from Walt Whitman’s Leaves of Grass (1855). Whitman’s poems, music in themselves, are also filled with musical references both surprisingly explicit and hauntingly spiritual. This setting, composed in 2012 for pianist-composer William Doppmann just before his death, traces Whitman’s joy in music from early discovery to eventual realization that, of all the senses that lead to his soul, indeed,“sound leads o’er all the rest.” The work, approximately 11 minutes in duration, was premiered at Pacific Lutheran University on October 14, 2014, the composer conducting.
